UD professor will perform original piece at Eastern Trombone Workshop
10:20 a.m., March 20, 2013--University of Delaware faculty member Bruce Tychinski will perform an original trombone piece with one of the nation’s finest military music ensembles at the Eastern Trombone Workshop at Fort Myer, Va., on Saturday, March 23.
The Eastern Trombone Workshop, which takes place March 20-23, is one of the largest annual trombone events in the world for students, performers and educators dedicated to the instrument.

Tychinski, assistant professor in the Department of Music, will present a piece nearly two years in the making, titled Divertimento for Trombone and Band. Tychiniski collaborated with nationally recognized and highly recorded composer Jack Stamp to design and revise the piece.
Stamp, chairperson of the music department and director of band studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, has been commissioned to compose works for leading military and university bands across the United States.
At the workshop, Tychinski will perform Divertimento for Trombone and Band with the U.S. Army Band, “Pershing’s Own,” under the direction of Col. Thomas H. Palmatier. “Pershing’s Own” is a top level band in the U.S. Army, comprised of the nation’s most outstanding military musicians, according to Tychinski.
Tychinski knew that hiring an esteemed composer, such as Stamp, would come at a price. He spent nearly two years forming a consortium of colleges and high school band programs in order to raise $15,000 to pay the fee for the composer’s time.
“The result, Divertimento for Trombone and Band, is a five movement work that varies in style with brilliant fanfares, a soulful soliloquy, a rhythmic interplay using 13 percussionists and even some funk,” said Tychinski.
Performing a piece created by a renowned composer and accompanied by an equally renowned band is a wonderful opportunity, according to Tychinski.
“This type of event is among the highest level of projects for a performing artist,” he said.
At UD, Tynchinski teaches applied lessons, low brass methods, directs the Trombone Choir and the UD Slides Jazz Trombone Ensemble. He is a member of the Washington Trombone Ensemble and the Nittany Trombone Quartet, and is principal trombonist of the Gulf Coast Symphony in Biloxi, Miss.
Tynchinski has performed with orchestras, chamber groups, jazz ensembles and popular artists across the country.
Over the next eight months, Tychinski will perform Divertimento for Trombone and Band six times, including a performance on campus with the UD Wind Ensemble in October.
