TEXT SIZE

10:08 a.m., June 10, 2013--The University of Delaware is eligible to nominate one young faculty member for the Searle Scholars Program, which makes grants to selected academic institutions to support the independent research of outstanding young scientists who have recently joined the tenure-track faculty.

The current grant level is $300,000 for a three-year period. The program awards 15 new grants each year.

Research Stories

Chronic wounds

UD's Millicent Sullivan and Kristi Kiick have received a $1.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for research that could provide a new approach to the treatment of chronic wounds.

Prof. Heck's legacy

The American Chemical Society is highlighting the legacy of the late Nobel laureate Richard Heck, the Willis F. Harrington Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at the University of Delaware with a digital tribute on its publications website.

This is a limited submission opportunity, and interested applicants should submit a project abstract and chair’s endorsement via this PDF to limited-submission@udel.edu by Aug. 5. The full application form will be provided to the UD nominee shortly thereafter.

Overview

The Searle Scholars Program was established at the Chicago Community Trust in 1980 and has been administered by the Kinship Foundation since 1996. The program is funded from the estates of Mr. and Mrs. John G. Searle. John G. Searle was the grandson of the founder of the global pharmaceutical company, G.D. Searle and Co. It was Searle’s wish that certain funds be used to support “research in medicine, chemistry, and the biological sciences.”

Applications must be submitted through invited institutions only, and not by individual candidates. Applications for awards to be activated on July 1, 2014, must be received no later than Friday, Sept. 27, 2013.

Selection process

Applicants will be screened by an advisory board composed of experts in the fields of interest to the program. All applicants will be advised of competition results by the end of April of the award year. Applicants are asked to refrain from contacting the program to ascertain the status of their application prior to this time.

Inquiries

Questions about scientific aspects of an application or about eligibility should be addressed to the Searle Scholars Program scientific director; other questions should be directed to the program’s administrative and grants coordinator.

Applicants for awards that will be activated on July 1, 2014, will be expected to be pursuing independent research careers in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology, and related areas in chemistry, medicine and the biological sciences.

Candidates should have begun their first appointment as an independent investigator at the assistant professor level on or after July 1, 2012. The appointment must be a tenure-track position (or its nearest equivalent) at an invited institution.

The Searle Scholars Program does not ordinarily support purely clinical research but has supported research programs that include both clinical and basic components. Potential applicants who are unsure if their research is appropriate for the program are encouraged to examine the research interests of present and former Searle Scholars on the program website.
