Osher Lifelong Learning Institute sets open house July 30 in Wilmington

10:46 a.m., July 18, 2012--The University of Delaware’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in Wilmington is hosting an open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, July 30, at Arsht Hall, 2700 Pennsylvania Ave., Wilmington. 

Members of the community are invited to learn more about this learning cooperative for individuals age 50 and over by attending the open house, which includes opportunities to meet current members and instructors. The open house will showcase a preview of fall courses and activities including art, gardening, language, information technology, music, tai chi and wellness. Tours of Arsht Hall and light refreshments will be offered.

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

UD’s lifelong learning program in Wilmington currently offers more than 265 courses and activities, attracting 2,100 members from around the Delaware Valley every semester.

Fall courses range from “A History of Painting” to “Understanding Mutual Funds,” with myriad course titles in between including "Madrigal Singers," "Hike Into History," "TV Science Fiction," "Google Cloud Computing," "Mac iBooks Author," "The Presidency and the Congress" and "Practical Mandarin." Extracurricular activities include bridge, mahjong, jazz ensemble and an investment seminar.

The $240 semester fee includes enrollment in five courses, plus extracurricular activities, special lectures and other social events. Members also can take advantage of the program’s affiliation with UD, including access to the UD student fitness center and Morris Library, as well as UD credit course audit and email privileges.

A special lecture series featuring UD Professor Emeritus Ray Callahan on the topic of war in history is also being planned for this semester.

Classes begin Sept. 4, and registrations are currently being accepted.
