Events Stories

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

At the “Understanding Your Voice” workshop, participants will learn principles and vocal techniques that will help build richer tone quality and better breath support in choral singing. The session will include visual illustrations, voice-building warm ups and singing simple choral repertoire.

The workshop facilitator is Duane Cottrell, assistant professor of choral music education at UD, where he directs the Concert Choir and the University Singers, a select women’s ensemble. Cottrell also teaches conducting and choral music education courses. Previously, he was the interim director of choral activities at Portland (Ore.) State University.

Cottrell completed a bachelor of music education degree from Louisiana State University, where he studied under Kenneth Fulton. He also completed doctor of musical arts and master of music degrees at the University of North Texas, where he studied choral conducting with Jerry McCoy, voice science and pedagogy with Stephen Austin and music education with Warren Henry.

The UD Community Music School, the outreach program of the University’s Department of Music, has provided a wide variety of music instruction options to adults and children. Current programs include early childhood and adult music classes, Suzuki Institute, chamber ensembles, jazz bands, music theory, steel drum ensembles and award-winning children’s choirs.

Registration forms for the free choral workshop can be found at the UD Community Music School website.
