UD's Community Music School offers wide range of programs

TEXT SIZE

8:56 a.m., Aug. 13, 2012--The University of Delaware’s Community Music School (UDCMS), the outreach program of the Department of Music that has offered a wide variety of music instruction options to people of all ages for more than 20 years, has a number of programs scheduled as the new academic year approaches.

The school will offer private study instruction for children, teens and adults on over 20 instruments.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

Music For Young Minds, an early childhood music program, provides music instruction for children from birth through age 6. Group classes include three children’s choirs for students grades 1-12; Suzuki violin, guitar and piano for students ages 4-12; and Family of Pan, a family steel pan class for people ages 9-99 offered on Saturday mornings.

UDCMS has evolved over the years to include classes and opportunities based on requests by the community. New this year is Jazz@UDCMS, a private instruction program in jazz playing and theory in more than five instruments.

The school has added a new children’s group piano class for ages 6-9 -- Music Makers at the Keyboard -- to further carry on the excellent work done in the Music For Young Minds program. This piano class is offered on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings.

Suzuki flute instruction is also available.

Also new to UDCMS is an adult group beginning piano class offered at convenient times on Wednesday evenings and Thursday mornings.

Adults can also join Schola Cantorum, a large symphonic chorus composed of community members, students and faculty.

In keeping with the Department of Music’s commitment to community education and outreach, the UDCMS will be offering two free vocal technique workshops this year for choral singers -- on Saturday, Oct. 6, for high school students, and on Saturday March 2, 2013, for adult church, community and civic choir members and their directors.

Instruction at UDCMS is affordable, and the school offers several different kinds of discounts.

The Family of Pan class offers free parent registration with each paid child registration, and the school supplies the pans during class time.

There are opportunities for several recitals during the year, as well as performance opportunities with collegiate musical groups and at various off-campus venues.

The UDCMS is accepting registration for the fall semester. For information, see the UDCMS website or call 302-831-1548.
