10:31 a.m., Sept. 7, 2011--Members of the Class of 2015 had the opportunity to sign their class banner at several events during their first few days on campus.

The banner, sponsored by the UD Alumni Association, featured the phrase “Students Today. Blue Hens Forever” and was on display at Activities Night and in the courtyard at the new UD Bookstore, where freshmen also picked up their class T-shirt.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

Carle Foster, a 1986 alumnus and chair of the UD Alumni Association's Outreach Committee, attended the banner signing events and said he was pleased to see so many students getting involved with the UD community.

"I was so happy to see the enthusiasm shown by the Class of 2015 regarding signing their class banner," Foster said. "It’s important for all students to understand that being a Blue Hen is about more than just the four years you spend on campus.” Attending the events with him was his wife, Kathy Riley Foster, a 1988 alumna. Their daughter, Allie, is a member of the Class of 2015, studying athletic training.

Lauren Simione, a 1995 alumna and assistant director of alumni relations, estimated that well over 2,500 freshmen signed the banner.

“It was great to see so many new Blue Hens jump at the chance to literally make their mark on behalf of their class,” Simione said. “Like the class of 2014, this class showed an incredible enthusiasm for the opportunity to sign their class banner. “

The banner will be displayed in the student centers throughout this school year, at class events over the course of the next four years, at Commencement in 2015 and at class reunions.

The UD Alumni Association (UDAA) was founded in 1846 and all alumni are automatically made members upon graduation. According to the UDAA’s mission, "The University of Delaware Alumni Association is proudly dedicated to engaging our entire alumni community by fostering a tradition of lifelong loyalty and commitment to University of Delaware.  We provide exceptional value and ongoing support to our alumni worldwide."
