UD Early Learning Center receives NAEYC accreditation
11:33 a.m., Nov. 16, 2011--Research has shown that by allowing children the opportunity to ask and answer their own questions, discover the world through touch and movement, and be surrounded in an environment that is designed around their interests and needs, they learn key development skills.
Leadership at the University of Delaware Early Learning Center (ELC) within the College of Education and Human Development understands this and provides a supportive and engaging environment that helps ignite the spark in a child’s mind. As proof of that dedication, the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) has awarded the ELC the mark of quality by the NAEYC Accreditation system.

Not only was ELC able to meet the accreditation standards, it received commendations on 10 of the 12 criteria.
“I am very proud of the quality of care we provide our students at the ELC. The faculty and staff are extremely dedicated and it is very rewarding that their efforts were recognized by NAEYC,” said Lynn Okagaki, dean of the College of Education and Human Development.
Staff at the lab school said they found the accreditation to be an exciting process. It provided the opportunity to review all the work they did providing a wonderful learning experience to their students. Teachers were also able to view their own lessons and improve upon their own methods when necessary.
“I am proud of and grateful to the staff of the ELC for the excellent work that they do every day and for the exceptional model of quality early care and education that they provide in support of academic programs and research projects across the University,” said Peg Bradley, director of the ELC.
The ELC offers an inviting learning environment for both students and parents alike. Christina Xia has two children at the ELC. “As first time parents, we were looking for a clean, safe, educational and friendly school for our child. After visiting over 10 schools, the ELC at UD became our first choice,” she said, adding, “The teachers and assistants are so open and approachable, they have become like a second family to us.”
The ELC offers child care and education for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years, as well as other services for families, including assessments, intervention services and parenting education.
ELC received special recognition from NAEYC for positive relationships with families, community agencies and institutions, and between children and staff.
ELC was also commended for the superior qualifications and knowledge of the teaching staff and the efficient and effective manner in which the program is administered.
