9:20 a.m., Nov. 9, 2011--The Delaware Environmental Institute (DENIN) is forming a student-led, University-wide Student Programs Committee and invites interested undergraduate and graduate students to submit an application to become a member of the committee.

The DENIN Student Programs Committee will plan several programs specifically targeted for UD students during the spring semester, with the goal of involving more students in DENIN’s environmental mission.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

Committee members, led by DENIN’s student intern, senior Lindsay McNamara, will work collaboratively with DENIN staff to identify the types of events and programs that would be most engaging to students and then carry out the activities. The committee will meet weekly during the 2012 winter session and spring semester, and members will be expected to help staff events.

“Many students at the University are pursuing degrees in environmental fields, so it will be beneficial for students to gain some real-world experience with environmental problem-solving, and for DENIN to gain insight on environmental issues from a younger generation,” said McNamara, who is an environmental studies major.

McNamara adds that any student with an interest in the environment is welcome to apply, regardless of major.

DENIN is primarily an interdisciplinary research-based institute, but it also has a significant outreach and education component to its mission, according to Jeanette Miller, associate director of DENIN. While the institute sponsors events such as the DENIN Dialogue Lectures, which are open to the entire University community, the new committee will focus on activities that appeal especially to students.

“We want to know what’s important to students who care about the environment and whether we can address what’s important through an environmental service project, a special speaker, a film series, a field trip, a ‘citizen science’ project, or some other activity,” said Miller.

The deadline for applications to join the committee is Monday, Nov. 21. The application form is available at the DENIN website or by emailing McNamara.
