Starting June 1, users will be able to search by time listed, lease period, rate and move-in date. They will also be able to email ads to roommates, parents, and friends, contact landlords by email or phone, view multiple photos of each property, and read a description of the listing.
Amenities are listed as graphic icons, making it easy for users to find the type of housing that meets their needs.
Places4Students provides many free services to make the rental process more convenient. Students can post advertisements at no charge to sublet their current properties. Each listing is displayed on a Google Map that shows the property’s proximity to the University.
As an added convenience, the roommate matching section allows students to post profiles with optional information including a photo, contact preferences, living preferences, desired property type, desired rental rate, occupancy date, and lease type.
Students can also call Places4Student’s toll free number directly to speak to a customer service representative if they need assistance or have questions about the website.
Karen DeMonte, associate director of Housing Assignment Services, said that the most important reason for partnering with Places4students is for the safety and convenience the system provides the University community. “Because of the high demand for campus housing, we want to ensure that our students have an easy way to find off-campus housing with appropriate security standards," she said.
In November 2006, the city of Newark, in cooperation with the Lindsey M. Bonistall Foundation, instituted a certified off-campus housing program to highlight safe and secure properties near the University.
Places4Students works to maintain a database of quality properties by allowing users to identify listings that meet the city’s safety standards. Each apartment listing is reviewed before it is posted to ensure that property information is not misrepresented. Landlords who do not abide by the guidelines listed by Places4Students will be removed from the website.
In an effort to provide the University community with a more formal way to search for off-campus housing, the portal offers landlords benefits, as well. Landlords can take advantage of a variety of services including the ability to track the number of views their listings receive, advertise premium properties in the featured section and create banner ads, make payment through a secure online system and access customer support toll free or on the Places4Students website.
