University of Delaware Alumni Weekend is for Blue Hens of all ages

10:31 a.m., May 11, 2012--There are plenty of family friendly and "kid-tastic" events planned for the University of Delaware Alumni Weekend, which will be held June 1-3.

UD alumni are invited to bring the whole family and check out some of the activities, which include tours, food, a fun run and walk, and swimming.

Sports, race, culture

Through a class on sports, race and culture, UD's Ronald Whittington helps students become aware of bigotry during the era of segregation and Jim Crow laws.

Ethnobotany

UD College of Agriculture and Natural Resources alumnus Michael Balick will return to campus Monday, May 5, for a presentation on "Ancient Wisdom and Modern Medicine: Plants, People and Cultures in the Tropical Rainforest."

Registration is available online at the Office of Alumni Relations' Alumni Weekend website.

Activities include the following:

• UDairy Creamery Tour – Saturday, June 2, 11 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4p.m. The UDairy Creamery will be open all weekend and visitors can enjoy a taste test of the newest ice cream flavor, Dela-bration. Tours are just $5.

• While on South Campus, visit the UD Botanic Gardens that surround the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. A series of 12 gardens on 15 acres, the gardens serve as a research center, laboratory and classroom, maintaining more than 3,000 species and cultivars of perennials, shrubs, and trees.

Blue Hen Brunch on The Green – Saturday, June 2, 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Alumni Weekend participants are invited to stop by the tent on The Green on Saturday morning for scrambled eggs, bagels, fruit, tater tots, sandwiches and more.  There will be a photo booth and games, and opportunities to have pictures taken with YoUDee and Baby Blue. The brunch will conclude with an announcement of the new UDairy Creamery ice cream flavor made especially for Alumni Weekend. Admission is $12 for ages 12 and up, and $7 for ages 3-11.

Blue Hen 5K Walk/Run and 1K Kids Fun Run – Saturday, June 2, 7:30 a.m. Registration for both events will open on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. under the tent on The Green.  A finish line celebration and awards ceremony led by Frank Newton will be held at 10 a.m. on the steps of Wolf Hall. Pre-registration for the 5K is required, and the cost is $20. The Kids Fun Run is free.

Beat the heat in the outdoor pool every day of Alumni Weekend. Splash, swim and snorkel in the University’s outdoor pool, located behind Gold Ice Arena off South College Avenue. The pool will be open every day of Alumni Weekend starting at noon. Admission is $5 per person.
