4:13 p.m., May 18, 2012--The sixth class of Alumni Undergraduate Research Fellows was announced May 7 at a dinner held by UD's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Courtyard Newark.

The fellowship program has been made possible by the generous financial support of David Plastino, who received his bachelor's degree in chemistry at UD in 1978. Plastino was one of first undergraduate research students of John Bulkowski, who is now associate professor emeritus, and his research experience inspired him to underwrite the program.

Research Stories

Chronic wounds

UD's Millicent Sullivan and Kristi Kiick have received a $1.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for research that could provide a new approach to the treatment of chronic wounds.

Prof. Heck's legacy

The American Chemical Society is highlighting the legacy of the late Nobel laureate Richard Heck, the Willis F. Harrington Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at the University of Delaware with a digital tribute on its publications website.

New fellows are

• Andrew Dover from Ephrata, Pa. He is a sophomore honors student majoring in chemistry and chemistry education, and is working in the laboratory of Joseph Fox, professor of chemistry and biochemistry.

• Michael Estephan from Downington, Pa. He is a junior chemistry major, working with Catherine Grimes, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry.

• Jennifer McCord from Miami, Fla. She is a sophomore honors student majoring in chemistry and is working with Neal Zondlo, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry.

• Tyler Slouf from Bear, Del. The sophomore chemical engineering major is working with Svilen Bobev, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry.

• Carissa Smoot of Sellersville, Pa. She is a junior chemistry major, working in the laboratory of Joel Rosenthal, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry.

• Naijing Su, originally from China, now living in Newark, Del. She is a junior chemistry major, working in the laboratory of Joseph Fox, professor of chemistry and biochemistry.

While a student at UD, Plastino was a member of Delaware's freshman basketball team and the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He received his MBA degree from the University of Michigan in 1981 and joined the Goldman-Sachs investment firm, eventually becoming vice president of investments. He then moved to UBS, where he became the senior vice president of investments before retiring two years ago.
