Center for Global and Area Studies to host panel discussion about 'Great Recession'

10:55 a.m., March 22, 2012--The University of Delaware Center for Global and Area Studies (CGAS) will present its inaugural event, “Sink and Swim: Europe and Latin America in the Wake of the Global Meltdown,” at 5 p.m., Thursday, May 3, in 116 Gore Hall.

Highlighting the center’s goal to foster international and transnational scholarship, the roundtable discussion will address the policy implications of the world’s uneven recovery after the “Great Recession” of 2008-09.

Experts Charles Kupchan of the Council on Foreign Relations and Michael Shifter of Inter-American Dialogue will join CGAS Director Julio Carrión, associate professor of political science and international relations, to discuss the consequences of the meltdown for the contrasting cases of Europe and Latin America. Carrión will serve as moderator.

While Latin America has rebounded from the global crash with remarkable strength, the debt crisis continues to undermine European stability.

“Why have Europe and Latin America followed such divergent paths after the worldwide collapse?” Carrión asked in his announcement of the event. “What have been the political and economic consequences of the collapse?”

Kupchan is the Whitney Shepardson Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, a leading independent and nonpartisan think tank. 

Drawing from his vast body of research and writing, including his most recent book No One’s World: The West, the Rising Rest, and the Coming Global Turn, Kupchan will address the policy outcomes of the global crisis in the European context. 

Shifter is the president of Inter-American Dialogue, the leading U.S. center devoted to policy analysis, cooperation and social equity among Western Hemisphere nations. 

A professor, author (he is the co-editor of Constructing Democratic Governance in Latin America), and former director of several programs related to regional democracy and human rights, Shifter will address the economic collapse’s policy implications for Latin American nations.

The Center for Global and Area Studies, the College of Arts and Sciences' hub for world scholarship and engagement, supports academic programs in African, Asian, European, Islamic, Jewish, and Latin American and Iberian studies. 

CGAS also organizes lectures and events in global and area studies, develops related majors and minors, and awards research grants to faculty whose work contributes to knowledge of the world.
