UD alumni plan range of special events, including lectures, museum tours

10:56 a.m., Feb. 17, 2012--University of Delaware alumni will gather for a variety of special activities -- including lectures, museum tours and sports -- in the coming weeks.

Lectures include a Global Agenda presentation by Washington Post reporter Dana Priest and museum tours include the Baltimore Museum of Industry and the Chicago History Museum. Alumni also are invited to a Saturday Symposium on Charles Dickens.

Authors Series

University of Delaware alumnus and investigative reporter Charles Lewis discussed his book "935 Lies: The Future of Truth and the Decline of American Moral Integrity" as part of the Delaware Diamonds Society Authors Series.

Intensive training

UD Police Officer Patrick McCloskey is one of nine Delaware law enforcement officers to complete an intensive training course to become a certified drug recognition expert.

Activities are as follows:

Saturday, Feb. 18, 10:30 a.m.: UD Saturday Symposium. Join UD alumni and friends for the third Saturday Symposium, this honoring the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens.

Saturday, Feb. 18, 11 a.m.: UD Family Day at the Baltimore Museum of Industry. Baltimore area alumni will offer family fun at a museum unlike any other. The Baltimore Museum of Industry tells the story of the workers, small business people, and citizens who built America.

Tuesday, Feb. 21, 6 p.m.: Boston Alumni Club open board meeting and happy hour. The Boston UD Alumni Club is working hard to put together events for 2012, and wants to hear suggestions for events and activities. The event is open to all UD alumni in Boston.

Wednesday, Feb. 22, 6:30 p.m.: UD reception at the 2012 Ocean Sciences Meeting in Salt Lake City. Join fellow College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment alumni, faculty and students for a private Blue Hen reception at the 2012 Ocean Sciences Meeting in Utah.

Wednesday, Feb. 22, 7:30 p.m.: Global Agenda 2012: Spies, Lies and Sneaky Guys. Global Agenda 2012 explores new challenges and opportunities in the field of international intelligence. This is the series opener and Dana Priest of the Washington Post will discuss the "Military Intelligence Complex."

Thursday, Feb. 23, 6 p.m.: San Diego Alumni Club happy hour in La Jolla. Join San Diego area Blue Hens in beautiful La Jolla for networking, conversation and refreshments.

Friday, Feb. 24, 12:30 p.m.: Delaware Art Museum Spring Lecture Series - Director's Delights. Join Danielle Rice, director of the Delaware Art Museum, as she takes a personal look at some of the major masterpieces in the museum.

Friday, Feb. 24, 6:30 p.m.: South Florida Alumni Club meeting and happy hour. Join South Florida area Blue Hens for a night of networking, brainstorming, refreshment and fun.

Saturday, Feb. 25, 10 a.m.: Chicago Alumni Club tours Chicago History Museum. Join UD alumni for a group tour of the new exhibit at the Chicago History Museum, titled Chicago: Crossroads of America.

Saturday, Feb. 25, 11 a.m.: UD alumni volunteer at Whatcoat Shelter in Dover. Join fellow Blue Hens in serving lunch to those in need in Dover.

Saturday, Feb. 25, 2 p.m.: UD baseball game in South Carolina. Cheer on the UD baseball team as it takes on The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., in the third game of a four-game series.

Saturday, Feb. 25, 8:30 p.m.: UD reception at Association of American Geographers Conference in New York City. Join fellow Blue Hen College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment alumni, faculty and students for a private reception following the conference in New York City.

Tuesday, Feb. 28, 5:30 p.m.: UD Bay Area Alumni at Sharks vs. Flyers game in San Jose. Join Bay Area Blue Hens as the San Jose Sharks take on the Philadelphia Flyers in a National Hockey League contest, and enjoy a pre-game gathering at Old Wagon Wheel Saloon.

Tuesday, Feb. 28, 7 p.m.: Washington, D.C., Alumni Club open board meeting. Join District of Columbia area Blue Hens at an open board meeting for event brainstorming, networking, light fare and UD spirit.

Tuesday, Feb. 28, 7 p.m.: DENIN Dialogue Lecture Series: Terry Tempest Williams. The Delaware Environmental Institute will offer a presentation featuring renowned environmental writer Terry Tempest Williams. She will be interviewed by McKay Jenkins, Cornelius Tilghman Professor of English at UD.

Wednesday, Feb. 29, 6 p.m.: Black History Month Celebration hosted by the UD Black Alumni Organization and the Center for Black Culture. Celebrate the culmination of Black History Month at the UD Center for Black Culture and network with fellow alumni and current students

Friday, March 2, 12:30 p.m.: Delaware Art Museum Spring Lecture Series -- Director's Delights. Danielle Rice, director of the Delaware Art Museum, will take a personal look at some of the major masterpieces in the museum.

Saturday, March 3, 10 a.m.: UD Family Day at the Please Touch Museum. Join UD alumni and their families for a fun-filled day at the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia.

Saturday, March 3, 10 a.m.: Kent and Sussex private cooking class at the Big Fish Grill. UD alumni will gather for a private cooking class at Big Fish Grill in Rehoboth Beach. Includes breakfast, lunch, dessert and an interactive entrée demonstration by the chef.
