UD listed among world-class universities

4:15 p.m., Aug. 15, 2011--The University of Delaware is listed among the top 150 universities around the globe, according to a study released Aug. 15 by the Center for World-Class Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

The center's 2011 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) puts UD in the 54-68 range among U.S. institutions and in the range from 102-150 around the world.

Fulbright awards

In the center's ranking of broad subject fields, UD placed among the top 100 in the areas of "Natural Sciences and Mathematics" and "Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences." In the subject ranking for mathematical sciences, UD placed in the 76-100 range for the second year in a row.

"This is the first time the University of Delaware has been listed among the top 150 worldwide in this annual survey," said Senior Vice Provost Mark Barteau. "We are pleased to see this recognition of the advancement of UD as a world-class research university."

"This ranking clearly recognizes the quality of our faculty," Provost Tom Apple said. "They are truly among the world's top intellectual leaders, and I am always happy to see my high regard for their capabilities and accomplishments reinforced by an independent organization. "

The top 10 universities in the listing are Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, Cambridge, Caltech, Princeton, Columbia, Chicago and Oxford. 

The Center for World-Class Universities first published its academic ranking in 2003 and has since updated it annually. More than 1,000 universities are ranked each year, and the top 500 are published on the center's website. 

Considered one of the most influential world rankings, it is based on six objective indicators, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; the number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Scientific; the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science; the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index -- Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index; and per capita performance with respect to an institution's size.
