Faculty and staff announce recent honors, presentations, publications

Micki Edelsohn, a member of the Center for Disabilities Studies’s Community Advisory Council, was inducted in the Delaware Women’s Hall of Fame on March 21. She was recognized by the Delaware Commission for Women for “changing the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Delaware and beyond.” In materials released about the inductees, the commission noted that Edelsohn “created the Homes for Life Foundation, a charitable organization with the purpose of building safe and comfortable homes for adults with intellectual disabilities. Since 1980, Micki has raised millions of dollars and built 25 comfortable, four-bedroom homes in residential neighborhoods. As Micki has provided housing, she has created new understanding of a population frequently stigmatized, opening possibilities that extend far beyond their front doors.” Edelsohn and three other 2012 inductees were nominated by individuals and organizations from throughout the state, based on their reputations for innovation, respect among colleagues, their leadership roles, and the respect and lasting effect of their work.
Jose-Luis Riera, associate dean of students, made two presentations at the national convention of ACPA College Student Educators International held in Louisville, Ky., March 24-28. Riera presented "Considering Spirituality and Leadership Practices of Senior Student Affairs Administrators" and was a panelist for a discussion "Beginning Within: Faith and Meaning Among Student Affairs Professionals." Riera was joined on the panel by Tricia Seifert of the University of Ontario, Sherry K. Watt of the University of Iowa and Dafina Lazarus Stewart of Bowling Green State University.
Eileen Sparling, project coordinator in the Health and Wellness unit at the Center for Disabilities Studies, presented at the Delaware Coalition for Healthy Eating and Active Living’s annual summit on March 22. Her presentation was titled “Including People with Disabilities in Health Promotion Activities.”
Suzanne Burton, associate professor of music, has published a book titled Engaging Musical Practices: A Sourcebook for Middle School General Music. The book provides practical, innovative strategies for teachers and methods students to involve students ages 10-15 in active music making.
Amanda Jensen, associate professor of mathematics education in the School of Education, has published "Developing Productive Dispositions During Small-Group Work in Two Sixth-Grade Mathematics Classrooms: Teachers' Facilitation Efforts and Students' Self-Reported Benefits," Middle Grades Research Journal, 2012, 7(1), 37-56.
Elizabeth Soslau, assistant professor of education, has a paper titled "Opportunities to Develop Adaptive Teaching Expertise During Supervisory Conferences" in Teaching and Teacher Education, 28, 768-779.
E. Evan Echols, assistant librarian, Special Collections Department, University of Delaware Library, wrote "University-Community Partnership Brings New Oral Histories Online," in Dialogue: The Newsletter of the Oral History Section, published by the Society of American Archivists, spring 2012, Vol. 8, issue 1, pages 11-12.
Margaret Grotti, senior assistant librarian, Reference Department, University of Delaware Library, wrote "WorldCat Local and Information Literacy Instruction: An Exploration of Emerging Teaching Practice," in Public Service Quarterly, published by Routledge, Taylor and Francis Group, 2012, Vol. 8, issue 1, pages 12-25.
Brian Freedman, director of the Transition, Education and Employment Model (TEEM) unit at the Center for Disabilities Studies, contributed a short article to the Kentucky Autism Training Center newsletter, Insight on Autism. Titled “Supporting Parents of Young Adults with ASD,” the article offers information and resources for the transition process and parental support. The article and the newsletter are available online. Another article written by Freedman, “Parental Stress and Family Relationships During the Transition to Adulthood,” was published in the spring 2012 issue of Autism Spectrum News, which can be found online on page 23.
