11:17 a.m., Sept. 28, 2010----University of Delaware Information Technologies (IT) warns the campus of a new attack that targets users of the LinkedIn professional network. Many UD faculty, staff, and students use the LinkedIn network to expand their “professional contacts.”

LinkedIn users are receiving fake email contact requests that can spread ZeuS malware.

“This attack propagates via forged LinkedIn unsolicited connection requests from new members and is predicted to have very good success,” Karl Hassler, associate director of IT Network and Systems Services, said.

He added that, today, these messages are accounting for 15-25 percent of the spam on some parts of the Internet.

“Since the attack targets banking credentials and since we know it's evading most spam scanners, we remind you to respond only to LinkedIn requests from people you know that are also addressed to your correct email address,” Hassler said.
