The guest bartender event and the Main Street Mile, a footrace through downtown Newark to be held Oct. 2, will benefit the Newark Police Department's K-9 unit. The department police dog Paco will be retiring and the funding will support the purchase, training and housing of a new dog.

Those who attend the Sept.9 event will learn more about the Main Street Mile and have an opportunity to register, meet Paco and listen to music by the Gas House Gorillas.

Guest bartenders include Newark Mayor Vance Funk; City Councilman Paul Pomeroy; Alderman Lisa Hatfield; Bill Sullivan, managing director of the Courtyard Newark at the University of Delaware; Bob Ashby, owner of the Deer Park Tavern; Fred McMinds, owner of the Benefit Group LLC; Charlie Tomlinson, associate publisher of Delaware Today magazine; Nic DeCaire, owner of Fusion Fitness; and Maureen Feeney-Roser, Downtown Newark Partnership administrator and assistant director of planning and development for the city.

The Main Street Mile is sponsored by the Downtown Newark Partnership, which includes the University of Delaware; Newark Police Department; Fusion Fitness Center; Deer Park Tavern; New Balance; Races2Run.com, and the Road Runners Club of America.

Runners can register for the Main Street Mile online at the Fusion Fitness Center website.
