8:59 a.m., Sept. 29, 2010----More than 350 faculty, staff, students and citizens turned out Sept 23-25 to hear diverse and innovative solutions to today's energy problems at the University of Delaware's annual student-run Energy and Sustainability 2010 conference.
Attendees to the program, held at both the Trabant University Center and Clayton Hall, enjoyed presentations from 27 speakers and 35 posters representing well over 26 organizations.
Highlights of the event included:
* Keynote speakers Amanda Little, Tom Gage, Daniel Lerch, John Byrne and Toby Hemenway;
* A community day focused on sustainable living for the average citizen; and
* An engaging debate on the merits and demerits of a carbon cap and trade policy.
Student co-chair Kai Mayeda, a doctoral student in engineering, summed up the debate saying, “The audience was originally divided evenly, but the debate team opposing a carbon cap and trade swayed the votes in the end and persuaded 20 percent of the audience to change their mind.”
The event was co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation Solar Hydrogen Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) Program at UD, the University of Delaware Energy Institute, and UD's College of Engineering.

Footage of the conference speakers will be available at the conference website.
