8:45 a.m., Nov. 15, 2010----Delaware's newest member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman-elect John Carney, is a University of Delaware graduate.
Carney earned his master of public administration degree from UD's School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy in 1987 and credits this experience with providing a deeper understanding of the significance of public service.
“It was through the University of Delaware's master of public administration program that I was able to gain the practical experience that has guided me throughout my career,” Carney said. “My summer internship in the UD President's office and my participation in the Legislative Fellows Program helped me better understand the importance of public service to improving our communities.”
WVUD interview
Recently, Carney visited campus radio station WVUD-FM to tape an interview for Broadside Radio.
Hosts Bill Humphrey and Edgar Petras asked Carney about his goals once in office and his stances on topics include the Bush tax cuts, Social Security and health care reform. Both juniors and Honors Program students, Humphrey is a political science major and Petras is a psychology major.
The interview provided Carney an opportunity to elaborate on issues that did not receive a lot of attention during the campaign due to the heavy emphasis on the economy.
The interview will air as part of WVUD's Broadside Radio on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 6:30 p.m., at 91.3 FM. It will be available online at the WVUD website.
About John Carney
Carney, who has a record of public service that spans more than 20 years, was elected to Congress on Nov. 2.
He served as Delaware's lieutenant governor from 2001-09, and as deputy chief of staff and later as Secretary of Finance under then-Gov. Tom Carper, himself a UD master's graduate, from 1994-2000.
“I was fortunate to serve the people of Delaware as Secretary of Finance under Gov. Carper and for eight years as lieutenant governor, working to strengthen the economy, improve our schools, and help Delawareans lead healthier lifestyles,” Carney said. “Now, as Delaware's Congressman-elect, I am honored to represent the best interests of our state in Washington, and I will work hard every day to move our state and nation towards a brighter future.”
Carney's earlier public service career included deputy chief administrative officer for New Castle County from 1989-94 and staff assistant to the-U.S. Sen. Joe Biden from 1987-89.
Carney credits his family's encouragement with his decision to enter public service. “I was inspired to pursue a career in public service by my parents,” he said. “They were both educators in Delaware schools and taught their own children that the most important thing a person can do in life is help others.”
Carney currently resides in Wilmington with his wife and two sons. He is a lifelong Delaware resident, having attended St. Mark's High School.
