6 p.m., Nov. 1, 2010----U.S. Sen. Ted Kaufman (D-Del.) spent Friday, Oct. 29, on the University of Delaware's Newark campus.
During his visit, the senator attended an engineering class, delivered the keynote address at the First State Leadership Conference and visited the University's fuel cell research center.
Kaufman's first stop for the day was at Jingguang Chen's chemical engineering class in kinetics, where he discussed everything from his own background in engineering (he earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at Duke University) to his advocacy for the expansion of education in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in the U.S. Senate.
The senator also explained that with greater investment in clean energy research and development, the industry will become the fasted growing job sector of the future.
After visiting Chen's class, Kaufman delivered the keynote address at the First State Leadership Conference, held at the Trabant University Center. In its second year, the conference -- hosted by the University of Delaware's StUDent Government Association --- was attended by more than 100 Delaware high school students who exemplify leadership in their communities.
Speaking to these student leaders, Kaufman discussed the importance of leadership and service that benefits others. “Leaders exist in all areas of work, not just in public service,” he said. “But what separates leaders from others are these qualities: taking responsibility, developing a vision and most importantly, having the determination to work hard.”
Later in the day, Kaufman added UD's Fuel Cell Research Center to the list of clean energy sites he has visited around the state over the past two years. Ajay Prasad and Suresh Advani gave Kaufman a tour of the facility, located in Spencer Laboratory, while undergraduate and graduate students gave demonstrations of their research projects. Kaufman ended the day with a ride on UD's zero emissions fuel cell hybrid bus.
