Newark honors UD student volunteers for work in community

1:28 p.m., May 16, 2011--Thirty University of Delaware student volunteers were honored for their work in the community at the annual Town and Gown Awards ceremony held May 12 in the Trabant University Center Theatre.

The awards are presented by the city of Newark, and the program is in its 15th year. University of Delaware Career Services solicits nominations of deserving UD student volunteers from local, regional and campus nonprofit organizations.

National Medal of Science

President Barack Obama recently presented the National Medal of Science to University of Delaware alumnus Rakesh Jain.

Warren Award

Rosalind Johnson, assistant dean for student success in the NUCLEUS Program in UD's College of Arts and Sciences, was presented the John Warren Excellence in Leadership and Service Award during a May 26 ceremony.

The top award, the Nikki Woolf Volunteer of the Year Award, was presented to two students, Melanie Patnaude and Hena Kumar, by Dennis Woolf. The award honors the memory of Woolf's daughter, a UD student who was killed in 1993.

Patnaude, a junior health behavior science major from Newark, Del., was honored for her work with Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Co., and Kumar, a senior human services major from Wilmington, Del., was honored for her work with the Delaware Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

In addition to the Nikki Woolf Award winners, following are student volunteers honored during the ceremony:

Lauren Turner, Staten Island, N.Y., sophomore in the College of Health Sciences. Nominated for her work at Anna P. Mote Elementary School, where she serves as a mentor volunteer. 

Marien Hernandez, Lynn, Mass., senior physics major. Nominated for his work at Anna P. Mote Elementary School, where he serves as a mentor volunteer.

Kristen Wilczynski, Wilmington, Del., senior art history major. Nominated for her work at Auburn Heights Preserve for Delaware State Parks.

Elizabeth Wolinski, Middletown, Del., sophomore in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Nominated for her work with Best Buddies Delaware.

Erin Page, Edgewater, N.J., junior human services major. Nominated for her work with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware.

Gina Paladinetti, Wilmington, Del., senior nursing major. Nominated for her work with the Delaware Pro Life Coalition.

Kelley Schieffer, Bear, Del., junior nursing major. Nominated for her work with Exceptional Care for Children.

Jacalyn Diottavio, Coatesville, Pa., junior in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment. Nominated for her work with the Fellowship in Serving the Hungry (FISH) Grocery Club.

Sara Mann, Damascus, Md., junior history major. Nominated for her work with the Fellowship in Serving the Hungry (FISH) Grocery Club.

Alexandra Bayles, Severna Park, Md., sophomore chemical engineering major. Nominated for her work with the Fellowship in Serving the Hungry (FISH) Grocery Club.

Victoria Combs, Wilmington, Del., senior marketing major. Nominated for her work with Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay.

Stacey Watro, Bedford, Mass., senior mathematics major. Nominated for her work with the Greater Newark Boys and Girls Club.

Morgan Schwartz, Bucks County, Pa., senior psychology major. Nominated for her work with JEVS Human Services.

Kayla Iuliano, Racine, Wisc., junior environmental science major in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment. Nominated for her work with Little Sisters of the Poor.

Erica Aguilar, West Chester, Pa., senior communications major. Nominated for her work with PAWS for People.

Bryce Komaroff, Brooklyn, N.Y., senior women's studies major. Nominated for her work with both Planned Parenthood of Delaware and Wellspring/University of Delaware.

Raychel Bouchat, Newark, Del., senior human services major. Nominated for her work with Planned Parenthood of Delaware.

Nirali Patel, Newark, Del., senior criminal justice and psychology major. Nominated for her work with Sexual Offense Support (SOS).

Meghan Wallace, Wilmington, Del., senior political science and women's studies major. Nominated for her work with Sexual Offense Support (SOS).

Kelly Russell, Newark, Del., senior psychology major. Nominated for her work with Sexual Offense Support (SOS).

Jenny Menzel, Exton, Pa., sophomore elementary teacher education major. Nominated for her work with the Mary Campbell Center.

Samantha Christie, New Jersey, sophomore wildlife conservation major. Nominated for her work with Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research.

Angela Zappalla, sophomore wildlife conservation major. Nominated for her work with Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research.

Jennifer West, Wilmington, Del., sophomore wildlife biology major. Nominated for her work with Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research.

Matthew Grasso, Huntington, N.Y., sophomore wildlife conservation major. Nominated for his work with Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research.

Victoria Bonner, Thornton, Pa., sophomore wildlife conservation major. Nominated for her work with Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research.

Daniel Gerber, Melville, N.Y., senior hotel, restaurant and institutional management major. Nominated for his work with the UD Office of Annual Giving, through which he served a co-chair of the Senior Class Gift program.
