Osher Lifelong Learning Institute offers morning lecture series
11:32 a.m., May 3, 2011--Spend a week in June learning from some of the region’s most fascinating people through a special program at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Delaware in Wilmington.
Highlights of the program, which will be be held mornings June 13-17, include a talk by Delaware’s former U.S. Senator Edward E. "Ted" Kaufman and a presentation by Dean Richardson, chief of large animal surgery at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pa., who treated the injured 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro. The week concludes with a presentation and performance on the life and music of Beethoven by performers from the Music School of Delaware.

UD’s Osher Lifelong Learning program is a membership organization for adults age 50 and over; however, this special series is open to the community, as well as to current program members. The week-long lecture series takes place Monday through Friday, June 13-17, at Arsht Hall on the University’s Wilmington campus, 2700 Pennsylvania Avenue. Topics and speakers will be:
- “The Senate” -- Edward E. "Ted" Kaufman, U.S. Senate, 2009-2010;
- “Libraries and Technology: Partners Not Adversaries” -- Susan Brynteson, vice provost and May Morris Director of Libraries, University of Delaware;
- “Unbuilt and Unexpected Nemours” -- Grace Gary, executive director, Nemours Mansion and Gardens;
- “We Don’t Shoot Horses” -- Dean W. Richardson, Charles W. Raker Professor of Surgery, chief of large animal surgery, New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania;
- “Paper Money in America, 1690-1913” -- Farley Grubb, professor, Department of Economics, University of Delaware, and research associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research;
- “Demise of Gold, Rise of the Dollar, Future of Money” -- James Butkiewicz, professor, Department of Economics, University of Delaware;
- “God and 4 Poets” -- Philip Flynn, professor emeritus, Department of English, University of Delaware;
- “Whither Federalization of Delaware’s Corporate Law” -- E. Norman Veasey, retired chief justice of the Delaware Supreme Court and senior partner, Weil, Gotshal and Manges LLP;
- “The Bow: The Other French Revolution” -- Glenn Bearden, archetier, David Bromberg Fine Violins, LLC; and
- “Beethoven’s World: Inside the Music, Mind, and Times of a Master Composer” -- The Music School of Delaware, Kate Ransom, violin, Lawrence Stomberg, guest cello, and Holly Roadfeldt-O’Riordan, piano
Each day will feature two lectures, the first one beginning at 9:15 a.m., and the second at 11 a.m. Doors will open at 8:45 a.m. each morning. The registration fee for the full series is $50 per person; light refreshments are included. Registration is open to everyone. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in Wilmington is a membership organization that provides opportunities for adults 50 and over to learn, teach, and travel with their peers. The only requirements for admission are interest in a continuing educational experience, support of the programs through participation, and a modest membership fee. Courses meet weekdays at Arsht Hall on the Wilmington campus. Ample free parking is available.
