3:21 p.m., March 9, 2011----Today, master of business administration students in the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics are hard at work developing strategies for the advancement of the nonprofit B Lab, which developed the idea of certified beneficial corporations (B Corps) that are active in social and environmental issues.
The students are preparing their findings and plans to be presented on Friday, March 18, during the college's annual Carol A. Ammon MBA Case Competition.
Specifically, the students must decide if and how the B Corps concept should be advanced. Currently, only Maryland and Vermont recognize B Corps as a new form of corporate entity. There are also jurisdictions like the city of Philadelphia that provide tax breaks and entities such as Yale University that provide tuition forgiveness to B Corps and their employees.
As part of the competition, the students are required to give a strategic presentation in which they must articulate a viewpoint and then support it with a plan moving forward, along with evidence to support their plan and opinion.
This year, a total of 53 graduate students on 15 teams will participate in the competition, representing the majority of degree programs in the Lerner College, including: MBA; master of science in accounting; master of science in information systems and technology management; master of science in organizational effectiveness, development and change; the dual MBA/MS in Finance; and dual MS in Engineering/MBA.
Roger Coffin, associate director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, will introduce the case to audience members.
The competition will be held in 125 Alfred Lerner Hall and will begin promptly at 1:30 p.m. Each of the three finalists from the 15 teams will give a 20-minute presentation.
The presentations will be followed by a reception and awards ceremony in the Lerner Atrium. The public is actively encouraged to attend.
Students participate in external case competitions
Lerner College MBA students are also busy participating in other competitions this spring.
A team of students will advance to the Philadelphia Regional Finals of the ACG Cup on April 8 in Center City, Philadelphia. Prof. Helen Bowers of the Department of Finance is overseeing the competition, which provides students from MBA programs across the country with real world experience examining mergers and acquisitions, investment banking and equity.
The student team for the Rutgers Supply Chain Case Competition has also been selected, and includes Bhaskar Ghosh, Alison Gilefski, Dong Guo and Jieqiong Xu. Professor Adam Fleischhacker is serving as adviser to the team, which will compete at Rutgers University on April 7. Ghosh and Gilefski are veterans, having participated and placed second in last year's competition.
