9:26 a.m., March 15, 2011----University of Delaware graduate programs in engineering, education and business are recognized in the 2012 edition of Best Graduate Schools by U.S. News Media Group.

Highlights of the rankings will be published in the Best Graduate Schools 2012 book, available April 5.

In this year's edition, UD's graduate education program is ranked at 26th, tied with Pennsylvania State University-University Park.

"The College of Education and Human Development has been working diligently over the last decade to improve our graduate program. These efforts have included increasing our level of research funding and creating a small but selective doctoral program. It is very gratifying to see that our efforts are being recognized, not only improving our ranking from 28 to 26 this year, but a steady upward trend since 2000 when we ranked 61," said Nancy Brickhouse, interim dean of the College of Education and Human Development.

UD's graduate engineering program is ranked 45th, tied with Brown, Case Western Reserve and Iowa State universities.

“The College of Engineering's continued ranking among the top 50 graduate schools affirms the quality of our programs and strengthens our commitment to continued enhancements that will attract high quality students,” Michael J. Chajes, dean of the College of Engineering, said.

In specialty rankings, chemical engineering is ranked 10th; environmental is ranked 38th (tied with Clarkson and Harvard universities and the University of California-Irvine); materials is ranked 45th (tied with Michigan State University and the University of Arizona); mechanical is ranked 51st (tied with Boston, Drexel and Stony Brook universities, Dartmouth College, the universities of Illinois-Chicago and Iowa, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute); civil is ranked 53rd (tied with Case Western Reserve and Washington State universities, Missouri University of Science and Technology and the University of Oklahoma); computer is ranked 61st (tied with Clemson, Drexel and Lehigh universities and the universities of Connecticut and Texas-Dallas); and electrical is ranked 75th (tied with Polytechnic Institute of New York University, Southern Methodist and Washington State universities and the universities of Buffalo-SUNY, California-Riverside, Cincinnati, Houston (Cullen) and Illinois-Chicago).

In its business section, UD is one of 17 schools tied at the 121st rank in a listing of top part-time MBA programs.

The guide also includes past rankings that include UD graduate offerings: the 2010 ranking of mathematics at 76 and the 2008 rankings of the physical therapy program at fourth, city management at 10th and public affairs at 41st.

The 2012 Best Graduate Schools, which will be available in book form on April 5, is the first rankings package to be launched on the newly redesigned U.S. News Education site.
