1:39 p.m., March 8, 2011----As a follow up to last year's successful initiative, the University of Delaware Office of Graduate and Professional Education, in collaboration with the Division of Professional and Continuing Studies (PCS), seeks to contract with academic units to develop and deliver distance education graduate programs (master's and graduate certificate programs).

Proposals are invited from programs, centers, institutes, departments and colleges for delivery of a complete graduate certificate or master's degree program via distance education, or hybrid distance and in-residence delivery. PCS will fund the development of distance master's degree programs up to $100,000 and graduate certificate programs up to $50,000.

“The program should provide a viable means for a student residing beyond commuting distance to UD to complete an entire degree or credit-granting certificate program, and may have a regional, national or global target market. Programs in any discipline are encouraged including traditional disciplines, multidisciplinary, and emerging disciplines,” said John Sawyer, associate provost for professional education, who is administering the program with James Broomall, assistant provost of professional and continuing studies.

Currently, the master of science in nursing (MSN), master of engineering, mechanical (MEM), and master of science in electrical engineering (MSEE) degree programs, as well as the graduate certificate in fashion are available through distance education.

As a result of last year's initiative funding, four new distance education programs are under development, including the M.Ed. in school leadership and the M.A. in economics education, and graduate certificates in disabilities leadership and in historic preservation, according to Broomall.

“The Division of Professional and Continuing Studies is available to support the development and delivery of graduate distance education programs in a variety of ways, through curriculum development, evaluating and implementing appropriate distance learning delivery systems, developing multimedia for an online environment, scheduling and logistics management for on-site sessions, marketing and promotion, and student services, including technical support,” Broomall said.
