1:53 p.m., March 15, 2011----On Wednesday, March 16, the University of Delaware's College of Education and Human Development will host a presentation of its Spring 2011 Colloquium Series at 1 p.m. in Room 207 of the Willard Hall Education Building.

Brian P. Ackerman, professor of psychology at UD, will discuss “Middle School Difficulties of Disadvantaged Children: Dual Problems or Dual Pathways.”

Economically disadvantaged children have been found to demonstrate lower academic achievement than other children in middle school and higher levels of conduct problems. Using longitudinal data from a restricted sample of disadvantaged families, this presentation contrasts two perspectives. The Dual Problem/Cascade view is that difficulties in each domain are launched upon school entry, grow over the early elementary grades and converge in middle school. In contrast, the Dual pathway view believes achievement difficulties and conduct problems in middle school represent quasi-independent problem trajectories that have different predictors and demonstrate modest convergence.
