Warren Award

Rosalind Johnson, assistant dean for student success in the NUCLEUS Program in UD's College of Arts and Sciences, was presented the John Warren Excellence in Leadership and Service Award during a May 26 ceremony.

“Maggie and William stand out even among the college's incredibly talented group of alumni,” said Dean Lauren Adamson. “They have both made truly significant contributions to their professions, to their communities and to Georgia State University.”

“I was very pleased to learn of the award that will be presented to Maggie Andersen by the College of Arts and Sciences at Georgia State University,” UD Provost Tom Apple said. “Just as Maggie has been a wonderful representative of her alma mater, she has been a great asset to the University of Delaware, for her research, her writing, her teaching and her administrative skills.”

Andersen graduated from Georgia State with a bachelor of arts degree in sociology in 1970, after working her way through school as a secretary in the University Computer Center. She completed a doctorate at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, launching an illustrious career as a researcher and scholar.

Andersen has published more than 25 scholarly articles, as well as a now-classic sociology textbook titled Race, Class and Gender: An Anthology. She has received numerous honors, including the American Sociological Association's Jessie Barnard Award.

“Throughout her distinguished career, Margaret Andersen has been, and still is, a pioneer in the study of the challenges confronting women, minorities, and especially minority women,” said Don Reitzes, chair of sociology. “In addition to her innovative scholarship, she has been a leader as vice provost for academic affairs at the University of Delaware, and as president of the Eastern Sociological Society and vice president of the American Sociological Association.”

Andersen has strong ties to her alma mater, and is currently serving on the college's board of visitors. She and her husband, Richard Rosenfeld, have endowed the Margaret Andersen Scholarship, which is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate or graduate sociology student at Georgia State University.

Pate has enjoyed an illustrious career in public relations, advertising and marketing, and currently serves as the president of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau.
