Ms. Iverson, 53, had worked at the University of Delaware since 1990, including the last four years within athletics where she worked closely with Scott Eatough, associate director of athletics for business affairs, in day-to-day business operations of the department.

"The entire Blue Hen athletics family mourns this loss, and our thoughts and prayers go out to Sandy's family and friends,” said Bernard Muir, director of athletics and recreation services. “Sandy meant a great deal to so many people here in our department and she will certainly be missed. Her battle was a truly remarkable one."

“Sandy touched so many lives while working here at the University of Delaware,” Eatough said. “She was loved and respected throughout the campus and the financial community and mentored so many students while here in athletics and during her time working with The Review. It's because of those strong relationships that she will be so deeply missed.”

Within athletics, Ms. Iverson worked in areas of budgets for postseason competition, financial policies and procedures, hotel and transportation contracts, payroll, purchasing cards, stadium and game support contracts and work study.

She joined the University of Delaware staff in 1990 and served as an office supervisor in the Office of General Accounting before moving to athletics. In the General Accounting office, she was responsible for providing financial advisory and audit oversight for the business and advertising concerns of the The Review; supervising and training student staff; producing monthly financial statements; and developing annual budgets.

After she moved to athletics, Ms. Iverson continued to serve as an adviser to The Review, a connection she maintained for more than 15 years. The editors of The Review called her “the world's most ardent advocate for The Review and, above all, a great person to know” and dedicated the March 1 edition to her.

During her career she also worked with UD athletics by developing training in the uses of advanced spreadsheet applications to produce reporting tools for budget oversight and account administration; with the UD Computing Center and UD Procurement Services; and with Vita Nova Restaurant on the UD campus.

An avid runner, she competed in two marathons. She also enjoyed crafts, cooking and spending time with her many animals at her home, as well as spending time at Cape Henlopen State Park and attending Blue Hen football games.

Ms. Iverson is survived by her husband, Jerry, and her children, Heather Iverson of Newark, and Wayne Iverson of Philadelphia. She is also survived by two sisters and two brothers.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, March 4, at McCrery Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington. Visitation will be at 6 p.m. Burial will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Delaware Humane Society, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE or online at [www.dehumane.org].
