2:05 p.m., June 13, 2011--With more than 100 provisional patents filed in the last two years and assisting with the creation of 6,500 jobs, the Office of Economic Innovation and Partnerships (OEIP) is continuously working to utilize the University of Delaware’s knowledge-based assets for the benefit of not only the University but also the state and region.

OEIP has undergone a rebranding campaign to further these efforts by unveiling a new logo and launching a new website.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

The new logo emphasizes the multi-faceted role of OEIP within the economic innovation and partnership spheres. The proximity of the “I” and the “P” in the logo was created to highlight the office’s role, with intellectual property (IP) as well as inventor, the inventor’s patent and the individual as functional pieces of the partnership.

The website, designed by the Office of Communications and Marketing (OCM), showcases OEIP’s four core principles: stimulating invention, enabling innovation, forging partnerships and creating jobs. Among its numerous new features, it boasts two that liken it to top-tier research institutions.

The IP Market, hosted by Flintbox, is OEIP’s first-searchable database that houses all information on the intellectual property developed by faculty and researchers at the University of Delaware. Flintbox, which is utilized by the world’s largest research institutions, will be used by UD to market its intellectual properties, assets and to promote collaborative research within the global research community. A highlight of this new database is the search capability, which enables a global search for inventions from UD and other institutions, such as Carnegie Mellon, Rice University and the National University of Singapore.

A second unique feature to the website evaluates OEIP’s effectiveness. William Latham and Kenneth Lewis, directors of the Center for the Applied Business and Economic Research (CABER), have conducted an economic impact study analyzing metrics from invention disclosures to UD start-ups and partnerships. The results of this analyses are featured under “Impact” on the redesigned website and will be updated annually. Some of the highlights include OEIP’s impact on the Delaware economy with $135 million in tax payments and $45 million in military contracts, not to mention the thousands of jobs directly and indirectly resulting from UD spin-off companies and innovations.

These improvements put OEIP in a more competitive bracket with other universities. “UD is engaged in groundbreaking work that will change lives,” said David Weir, director of OEIP. “Our new website design will help market our IP as well as demonstrate how those inventions and innovations have an impact on Delaware and the region and how they will contribute to the goal of putting the University of Delaware into the global spotlight.”

About OEIP
