8:07 a.m., July 21, 2010----The University of Delaware will hold its first Undergraduate Research and Service Celebratory Symposium on Wednesday, Aug. 11, in Clayton Hall.

The event will showcase the work of more than 300 undergraduate research and service scholars and visiting scholars who will represent every college and discipline.

The majority of the students have been involved in an intensive 10-week summer experience taking place in laboratories, studios, schools, hospitals and several international locations, according to Lynnette Overby, director of UD's Office of Undergraduate Research and Experiential Learning.

There will be oral and poster presentations from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and an art exhibit by undergraduate artists representing the Undergraduate Research Program, the Office of Service Learning and the McNair Scholars Program will take place in the Studio Art Building from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

The featured speaker will be Catherine Drennan, professor of chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who will present a lecture titled "Snaphots of Proteins in Action" at 11:15 a.m.

Participating in the symposium will be students from the following programs:

  • Arts and Humanities Summer Scholars, Undergraduate Research Program;
  • ArtsBridge America Scholars;
  • Blue Cougar Fellows (visiting McNair Scholars);
  • College of Education and Human Development Scholars, Undergraduate Research Program;
  • College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Summer Scholars;
  • Department of Defense Summer Scholars;
  • High Performance Computing Fellows Program;
  • Howard Hughes Medical Institute Scholars;
  • IGERT Summer Scholars;
  • NIH NCRR IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence;
  • NISE Electrical Engineering Program Scholars;
  • NSF Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCOR);
  • Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program Scholars;
  • Science and Engineering Summer Scholars, Undergraduate Research Program;
  • Service Learning Scholars, Office of Service Learning;
  • Social Science Scholars, Undergraduate Research Program; and
  • Undergraduate Research in Energy and Sustainability.

The program agenda will be finalized and available by July 30 on the Undergraduate Research and Experiential Learning website. The site will allow interested visitors to view the program and link directly to student abstracts in a particular department or college.
