Honors

A tribute issue of the American Chemical Society publication I&EC Research honored Stanley Sandler, Henry Belin du Pont Chair of Chemical Engineering at the University of Delaware, for lifelong dedication to the chemical engineering profession. Called a festschrift, German for “celebration publication” presented during one's lifetime (especially in academia), the special issue invited Sandler's colleagues, peers and former doctoral students to contribute original scientific work for publication in his honor.

Sandler is a member of the prestigious National Academy of Engineering and a longtime member of the chemical engineering faculty. He is well known for his research in applied thermodynamics and he has received worldwide recognition as an invited lecturer in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa.

The following University of Delaware colleagues and doctoral students contributed scholarly papers to the publication in Sandler's honor:

Babatunde A. Ogunnaike, deputy dean of the College of Engineering and William L. Friend Professor in Chemical Engineering at UD, served as guest editor for the issue published in January.

Presentations

Suzanne L. Burton, associate professor of music education, gave an invited presentation on the service-learning projects ProjectMUSIC and ProjectMUSIC Opera! as models of community engagement in music at the College Music Society's Summit on Community Engagement in Atlanta, Jan. 15. Burton is the newly appointed chair of the College Music Society's Community Engagement Committee for 2011-2013.

Joan L. Brown, Elias Ahuja Professor of Spanish, delivered a keynote address at the University of London on Dec. 10 at the conference "Carmen Martín Gaite 10 Years On: Revisiting Her Textual and Visual Legacy."

Martha Carothers, professor of art, presented "Student Design of Artist's Books," at DesignEd Asia Conference 2010, Hong Kong, Nov. 30-Dec. 1.

Publications

Dannagal Young and Lindsay Hoffman, assistant professors in the Department of Communication, are authors of the chapter "Political Communication Survey Research: Challenges, Trends, Opportunities” in the publication Sourcebook for Political Communiation Research, Routledge, 2010. The chapter charts the history and suggests future trends for survey research in the area of political communication research. In addition, Young and Hoffman examine three important variables often measured in surveys (political knowledge, voting intention and behavior and media use)

Ronald Peterson, associate librarian, Library Systems Support Department, University of Delaware Library, serves as a member of the Editorial Committee and is the author of the "Editorial Introduction," Issue 3 and "Editorial Introduction: The Code4Lib Journal Isn't Just for Coders," Issue 12, Code4Lib Journal.

Awards

Roberta Mayer, who earned her master's and doctoral degrees in art history at UD in 1996 and 2000, respectively, has been chosen from among 300 top faculty members across the United States as Pennsylvania's 2010 Professor of the Year. An associate professor at Bucks County Community College, Mayer received the award from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. A full-time faculty member at the college since 2001, she teaches classes in subjects including American art history and the history of American furniture and also is head of the Visual Arts Area in the Department of the Arts.
