9:34 a.m., Feb. 18, 2011----UD in the News provides a roundup of recent news items about the University of Delaware, its faculty, students, staff and alumni.
James Butkiewicz, professor of economics, was quoted in a Feb. 18 News Journal article about DuPont's decision to expand agricultural biotechnology research in Delaware. "It's basically saving DuPont money. But if they say they're adding jobs, that will be helpful. Every job helps these days," Butkiewicz said.
Liz Pendang, a UD senior and vice president of the Catholic Campus Ministry, was quoted in a Feb. 18 News Journal article about the Confession application for the iPhone and iPad.
Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a Feb. 17 News Journal article about “golden parachute” compensation packages for leading executives with Wilmington Trust in the wake of the merger with M&T. "Every time a golden parachute blows up, boards -- I think increasingly -- wonder about the value of them," Elson told the newspaper.
Elson also was quoted in Feb.16 Bloomberg, Reuters, Financial Times and Philadelphia Inquirer articles about Air Products and Chemicals its now-abandoned attempt to take over Airgas, and in a Feb. 14 Wall Street Journal article about shareholder angst, saying, "The economic malaise partly explains investor angst. People who lost a lot of money in the market are mad."
The Bodyscapes exhibit at the University of Delaware's Mechanical Hall was featured in a Feb. 17 posting on the Studio Museum Harlem blog site.
Rebecca Sheppard, assistant professor in the School of Public Policy and Administration and associate director of the Center for Historic Architecture and Design, was quoted in a Feb. 16 Lewes Cape Gazette article about Milton Town Council consideration of a plan to expand its historic district. CHAD completed a survey of structures in the town.

John Antil, associate professor of business administration, was quoted in a Feb. 15 Community News article about Super Bowl commercials.
Marsha Dickson, chair of the Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies, was featured in an interview in The Times of India on Feb. 14, discussing ethical marketing and fair trade in the apparel industry. In the interview, Dickson makes the point that companies should clearly define their goals in terms of ethical trade and pursue those goals consistently. She says that ethical trade practices protect human rights and help the economies of developing nations.
Charles Beale, director of the Center for Counseling and Student Development, was quoted in a Feb. 14 Philadelphia Inquirer article about mental health among college freshmen. Beale said UD had seen a 27 percent increase in requests for counseling in the fall, with students describing "more distress and difficulty in negotiating their academic, social and interpersonal lives."
Joan DelFattore, professor of English and legal studies, wrote a commentary in the Feb. 13 edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education, titled "Huck Finn, Hostile? Hardly," in which she argues that Mark Twain's use of an offensive word in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn does not create a hostile learning environment for students reading the book in class. "In reality, being required to confront difficult, embarrassing and controversial matters [such as racism] and to learn how to deal with them does not constitute a hostile learning environment," DelFattore writes. "It constitutes education."
Janis Tomlinson, director of University Museums, was quoted in a Feb. 13 News Journal article about the artist Ed Loper.
Amy Greenwald Foley, senior associate director in the Office of Admissions, wrote an article for Campus Slash concerning essay writing tips for prospective college students.
