3:20 p.m., Feb. 15, 2011----For most people this winter, cold and ice have meant freezing frustration, but for the members of the University of Delaware Synchronized Skating Team (UDSST), cold and ice have meant another first place finish.

Synchronized skating is the “newest and most challenging discipline in the skating world,” according to team member Gina Moser, a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences. “It's skating in complete unison, forming different formations, patterns and shapes while telling a story through music and movement.”

The sport of synchronized skating demands perfection, precision and intricacy which can only be achieved through practice, passion and unfailing dedication -- all of which the UDSST possesses, Moser said.

On average, the team practices over 10 hours a week with the occasional six-hour long practice when they feel they aren't at their best. In addition, the team has a personal trainer for weight training and cardio off the ice.

“It requires real loyalty and time from each member when you work together so much,” explains Moser.

With this attitude, it is no surprise that the UDSST took first place for the 13th consecutive year in the collegiate division at Eastern Sectionals held Feb. 3-5 in Lake Placid, N.Y. After winning against seven other teams, the UD squad now moves on to nationals in Ontario, Calif.

The significance of this win extends beyond the rigid score sheets and medals for these girls, Moser said. “We're continuing a tradition and knowing that all our hard work is making a difference when we step off the ice is truly surreal.”

Details about the team are available at the UDSST website and Facebook page.
