Thompson said she “looks forward to working with the commission members to develop diversity initiatives that will enhance the visibility of all aspects of diversity on campus and move the University forward on the Path to Prominence.”

Thompson will serve alongside co-chair Araya Debassay, professor of accounting and management information systems in the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics.

She will fill the position being vacated by Suzanne Austin, interim dean of the College of Education and Human Development, who has accepted a position as vice provost for student and faculty success at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The Diversity and Equity Commission was formed this fall and charged with the task of enhancing the visibility of diversity on campus and in the community.

This work is stressed in the Path to Prominence strategic plan, which states: “The University of Delaware will foster a robust educational environment in which all people are welcome and feel welcome -- one that supports critical thinking, free inquiry, and respect for diverse views and values. As a community, we will embrace diversity as an integral and vital part of everyday life and a cornerstone value of our University.”
