9:02 a.m., Dec. 20, 2010----Between Nov. 28 and Dec. 8, a project was mounted at the University of Delaware to collect clothes for various communities in South Africa and the Dominican Republic. The Humanitarian Hospitality Society and Lead Council led the initiative with the support of Residence Life and the Student Centers Programming Advisory Board (SCPAB).
The groups organized several drop off locations across campus in the Perkins Student Center Gallery and the Trabant University Center Multipurpose Room.
Residence Life assisted in allowing access to all residence halls where boxes for the collection of clothes was provided and also asking resident assistants to ensure the integrity of the boxes.
Apart from the actual collecting of clothes there were information kiosks and box decorating events held to spur enthusiasm amongst UD students.
In the end the project succeeded in collecting about 50 13-gallon garbage bags overflowing with T-shirts, dresses, shoes, pants, and even winter clothes. The clothes will be distributed throughout Winter Session by students and professors visiting the respective countries. Any clothes not quite fit for the warm climates will be distributed to local organizations in need of clothes.
During the spring semester the Humanitarian Hospitality Society will conduct a food drive for the same communities in the Dominican Republic.
