9:02 a.m., Aug. 31, 2010----The University of Delaware's annual series of talks about material culture, which begins on Wednesday, Sept. 1, this year focuses on textiles and fashion and will include a visit to UD's historic costume collection.
All the talks in the “Fiber and Fashion” series are free and open to the public. Offered in conjunction with the course MCST/FASH 267, each session meets from 1:25-2:20 p.m. Wednesdays in 150 Alison Hall.
The speakers represent disciplines from art history to mechanical engineering, and topics include sustainable practices in the design and manufacture of clothing, the use of fabric as protection from gunshots, fabric-based performance art and managing a costume collection. Here is the schedule:
Sept. 1 -- Introduction.
Sept. 8 -- “The 100-Mile Suit Project: Fashion as an Exercise in Regionalism,” Kelly Cobb, instructor in fashion and apparel studies.
Sept. 15 -- Visit to the historic costume collection, 202 Alison Hall.
Sept. 22 -- Marsha Dickson, chairperson, Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies.
Sept. 29 -- “Berlin Needlework: Victorian Craft or Kitsch?” Nicole Belolan, graduate student, Department of History.
Oct. 6 -- “Stretching Fabric to the Limit: Using Textiles for Ballistic Protection,” Michael Keefe, associate professor of mechanical engineering.
Oct. 13 -- “The Further the Distance, the Tighter the Knot,” Martha McDonald, performance artist with textiles.
Oct. 20 -- “Fabricating Girls' Coming-of-Age Fiction,” Margaret Stetz, Mae and Robert Carter Professor of Women's Studies.
Oct. 27 -- “Fashion: The Makings of a Fake Fairytale,” Wendy Rosie Scott, freelance journalist, writer, lecturer and consultant in lifestyle and culture.
Nov. 3 -- John Bernard, associate professor of food and resource economics.
Nov. 10 -- “So *** Labor Intensive: Art, Textiles and eBay Converge in the 21st Century,” Mary Smull, fashion designer.
Nov. 17 -- Linda Eaton, director of collections and senior curator of textiles, Winterthur Museum.
Nov. 24 -- No class.
Dec. 1 -- “Clothes and Costumes in Rembrandt's Self-Portraits,” Perry Chapman, professor of art history.
