1:30 p.m., Sept. 18, 2009----Remember the old expression, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away?” The University of Delaware is taking this to a whole new level with “Veg Out,” a health campaign that encourages members of the University community to eat more fruits and vegetables.
“Recent nutritional information tells us that fruits and vegetables not only aid in reducing the risk of many diseases, including heart disease, high blood pressure and some cancers, but eating them also makes you feel healthier and more energized,” says Kathy Corbitt, director of UD's HealthyU Employee Wellness Program. “Incorporating them into your diet should be the easy part -- trying to choose should be the hard part.”
To help jump start the program, Healthy U will be sponsoring a kick-off event on Friday, Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 1p.m. in Mentors' Circle. Various campus organizations, departments and local businesses will be on hand to distribute valuable information and tips ranging from what to look for when buying fresh produce to the many health benefits related to fruit and vegetable consumptions. This event is open to both students and employees.
Vendors will include UD Dining Services, Sysco Eastern Maryland, the Department of Animal and Food Sciences, UD Cooperative Extension, New Castle County Cooperative Extension, Wellspring, Healthy HENS, HealthyU, Milburn Orchards, Newark Co-op, Environmental Soil Management Research Group, and the Nutrition and Dietetic Club.
Sysco Eastern Maryland will also have fresh produce available for purchase to include apples, sweet corn, tomatoes, peaches, summer squash and zucchini.
A percentage of the fruit and vegetables purchases made at the Veg Out event will go to the Delaware Food Bank.
The Veg Out employee campaign will begin on Sept. 28 and run through Nov. 8. The cost is 15 Wellness Dollars, with which you will receive an activity log, weekly tips, and be entered to win in our weekly trivia challenge. All program participants will also receive an EZ-Freeze container.
To learn more or to register for this program, log in to HealthyU or call (302) 831-8388.
