The magazine, which has both print and online editions, is produced through a collaboration of the UD Research Office and the Office of Communications and Marketing.

“High-quality research is one of the University of Delaware's core strengths,” says UD President Patrick Harker, “and the breadth and impact of that research is expanding significantly. With external funding for research fully doubling in the past decade, the University of Delaware is on the path to becoming one of the world's very best research institutions and we want the public to know it and get engaged in our future.”

The magazine's inaugural issue, an annual report of the past fiscal year, leads off with the University of Delaware Energy Institute (UDEI), a new center marshaling the expertise of more than 250 UD researchers in alternative energy science, engineering, and policy. Recently, UDEI investigators won a $17.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to establish an Energy Frontier Research Center focusing on converting biomass from trees and grasses into energy and fuels.

Other major developments are highlighted, from the founding of the Delaware Health Sciences Alliance, an important regional partnership dedicated to transforming the latest bioscience research into clinical practice, to the opening of the Office of Economic Innovation and Partnerships. The new office is connecting faculty and students to the private sector so that their research can be applied in new ways -- in new technologies, processes, and materials -- that can spur economic growth.

Research partnerships around the world in coastal science to astronomy are presented, as well as new state-of-the-art facilities, including a novel airship for environmental studies and the Exelon Trading Center, which replicates the trading floors on Wall Street for real-world business and economics research.

The 12 major sections of the report range from research and society, and the art of research, to student and faculty honors, and new books by faculty.

“We look forward to connecting with established research partners and engaging new friends and collaborators in the first-class research under way by our faculty, students, and staff,” says Mark Barteau, senior vice provost for research and strategic initiatives. “There is a wealth of research and creative activity being pursued across this campus, and we look forward to sharing it.”
