11:49 a.m., Sept. 22, 2009----The University of Delaware Department of Music will present Andrew Balio, trumpet guest artist, and Julie Nishimura, piano faculty artist, in a recital at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 29, in the Gore Recital Hall of the Roselle Center for the Arts.
Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for seniors and alumni, and $3 for students, and are available at the REP/PTTP Box Office in the Roselle Center for the Arts or by calling (302) 831-2204.
There will also be a free master class Monday, Sept. 28, at 1:25 p.m., in Gore Recital Hall.
Balio has been principal trumpet of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra since 2001. Previously he was principal trumpet of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, under Zubin Mehta. He held the same position with the Mexico State Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Philharmonic.
He taught at the National Conservatory in Mexico and has presented master classes throughout Europe, South America, and Japan. He has recorded for the Sony, RCA, Angel, Phillips and Teldec labels.
In 2006 he founded Futuresymphony.org, an online think-tank to examine innovative ways of making symphony orchestras financially viable while preserving their artistic mission.
Nishimura, a faculty member in the Department of Music at the University of Delaware, has performed on Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall Chamber Music Series and the Philadelphia Orchestra's Chamber Music Series in the Kimmel's Center Perelman Theater.
She has served as music director for the Delaware Theatre Company, City Theatre, Opera Delaware and Distant Voices Touring Theatre which is currently touring two docudramas with piano, Distant Voices and September Echoes.
