8:13 a.m., Sept. 28, 2009----The Downtown Newark Partnership, which includes the University of Delaware, will sponsor the third annual Main Street Mile run at 8 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 3.
The race, sanctioned by USA Track and Field and the Road Runners Club of America, benefits the Newark Police Department's K-9 Unit and the Downtown Newark Partnership.
The race will begin at the McDonald's traffic circle on Main Street and finish minutes later at the Deer Park Tavern. Elite runners from around the region will compete for $250 in top prize money to be awarded to the first male to break a 4-minute mile and the first female to break a 4:40 mile. Cash prizes will also be awarded for the top male and female finishers.
Prizes will be awarded at a brunch hosted by the Deer Park Tavern, 108 West Main Street, immediately following the last race. The event will feature a demonstration featuring veteran K-9 police dog Paco.
Registration for the Main Street Mile is available at the Fusion Fitness Center Web site.Runners may pre-register until Sept. 30 for $16, and everyone who pre-registers will receive a Main Street Mile T-shirt. Registration after that date is $20. Day of race registration is 7- 7:45 a.m. at Fusion Fitness in Market East Plaza.
The Main Street Mile is presented by Schlosser and Associates Mechanical Contractor and sponsored by the Downtown Newark Partnership, Newark Police Department, Ameriprise, Blood Bank of Delaware, Crown Trophy, Deer Park Tavern, Krista Milkovics - Attorney at Law, Fusion Fitness Center, Lang Development Group, Louviers Federal Credit Union, Newark Dental Associates, Uniglobe Travel, George J.
