The talk is part of the University of Delaware Department of History's Alumni Lecture Series. In it, McNeill will assess the scale, scope and character of environmental changes around the world since 1890 and will try to explain why they happened and why they happened in the ways they did.

The talk will focus on the energy system that evolved in the 20th century, population growth and urbanization, and on the environmental consequences of efforts to achieve national security in an age of total war.

McNeill received a bachelor's degree from Swarthmore College and a doctorate from Duke University. He is a member of the faculty of the School of Foreign Service and History Department at Georgetown, and from 2003-06 held the Cinco Hermanos Chair in Environmental and International Affairs until his appointment as University Professor. He teaches world history, environmental history, and international history.

The lecture is sponsored by the UD Department of History alumni and friends, and is free and open to the public.
