Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in numerous articles about the Obama administration's crackdown on executive compensation, including Oct. 23 by the Associated Press and Bloomberg news service and in the Oct. 21 Wall Street Journal, Toronto Globe and Mail and USA Today. “Politics and economics don't mix and when they do you have disastrous results,” Elson told the Globe and Mail, noting to the Wall Street Journal, “It dramatically injects the government into pay practices at private companies, and could lead to great harm to investors. It diminishes the authority of the board and the other investors that the board is there to protect." He also was quoted in an Oct. 23 Los Angeles Times article about the role of former News Corp. executive Peter Chernin in Comcast negotiations to take control of NBC Universal, and in an Oct. 19 Wall Street Journal article about Pritzker family squabbles behind the scenes at Hyatt Hotel Corp.

Lance Winn, associate professor of art, was cited in an Oct. 22 New World Notes Chestnut's Picks blog about the Second Life virtual world art show being presented by UD. (http://www.udel.edu/udaily/2010/oct/secondlife102109.html)

James Butkiewicz, professor of economics, and William Latham, associate professor of economics, were cited in an Oct. 21 Bloomberg news service article about frozen auction-rate bonds, which total more than $63.5 billion. “People need to consider the fact that reducing the access of these firms to these funds is producing more of a drag on the economy,” Butkiewicz said. “If there's some way to get this money unfrozen, that money's going to be put to work doing things.”

Carole Marks, professor of sociology, was featured in an Oct. 21 Sussex Countian article about her book Moses, The Monster and Miss Anne.

James Curtis, professor emeritus of history, was featured in Oct. 19-20 Zoom blog entries by Erol Morris in The New York Times. The blog concerns the influences and uses of photography, and the entry was about honesty in documentary photography.

Jeremy Firestone, associate professor in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, was quoted in an Oct. 20 News Journal article about a wind turbine agreement between UD and Gamesa.

Ralph Begleiter, Edward and Elizabeth Goodman Rosenberg Professor of Communication and Distinguished Journalist in Residence, was quoted in an Oct. 19 U.S. News and World Report Washington Whispers blog about UD as the “epicenter of politics,” citing work by Blue Hens David Plouffe, who was a leader in the 2008 Democratic campaign of President Barack Obama, and Steve Schmidt, who was a senior adviser to Republican John McCain.

Patricia DeLeon, Trustees Distinguished Professor of Biological Sciences, was featured in an Oct. 19 Jamaica Gleaner article as an outstanding achiever in the Caribbean nation. It was announced earlier this year that she will receive Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring.

Donald Sparks, S. Hallock du Pont Professor of Plant and Soil Sciences and director of the Delaware Environmental Institute, and Kyungsoo Yoo, assistant professor of plant and soil sciences, were quoted in an Oct. 19 News Journal article about a $4.3 million National Science Foundation grant to establish the Christina River Basin as a critical zone observatory.

Elena Delle Donne, UD women's basketball player, is featured in the November issue of Delaware Today.

Mary Ann McLane, professor of medical technology and president of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science, was interviewed for a broadcast by radio station KXLG-FM on Oct. 16 at an ASCLS regional meeting in South Dakota. She also was interviewed Oct. 12 for the nationally syndicated radio show Life, Love and Health produced in San Francisco. She discussed the critical shortage of clinical laboratory sciences professionals and the baccalaureate program at UD, and the important role laboratory professionals play in patient health care.

Burton Abrams, professor of economics, and George R. Parsons, professor of marine policy and economics, were cited in an Oct. 4 Wall Street Journal opinion piece about the government's cash for clunkers program. In a study published in late September, Abrams and Parsons noted that the program cost about $2,600 per vehicle while producing benefits of just under $600 per trade, and that the benefits were from burning less fuel and not in real economic growth.
