6:35 p.m., Oct. 13, 2009----“The Last Days of Pompeii: Decadence, Apocalypse and Redemption” will be the topic of a lecture by Kenneth Lapatin, associate curator of antiquities at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, Calif., at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 11, in 100 Kirkbride Lecture Hall.
Sponsored by the UD Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, the lecture is open to the public.
Lapatin will revisit one of the most famous archeological sites in the world and demonstrate how successive generations made the ancient tragedy their own as they relived the dramatic events of AD 79, although from a comfortable distance in time.
He will illustrate these acts of cultural appropriation and projection through some of the finest visual and literary imaginations of the past three centuries.
Lapatin is the author of Chryselephantine Statuary in the Ancient Mediterranean World, Mysteries of the Snake Goddess: Art, Desire and the Forging of History and Papers on Special Techniques in Athenian Vases.
He served as guest curator of the 2009 exhibition, “Pompeii and the Roman Villa,” for the National Gallery and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
