The reception provided an opportunity for new faculty to meet each other, as well as chairpersons, directors and administrators in the college.

George Watson, interim dean of the college, greeted the 35 new faculty. “We are delighted that you have joined the University of Delaware and our college,” he said. “We're counting on you all to contribute in significant ways to our mission.”

Watson said the college seeks “to foster the core values of a liberal arts education: discovery, creativity and diversity, as well as innovation, imagination, and transformation.”

He challenged new faculty “to make time available, on a regular basis, to enjoy the benefits of working at a great University, to engage in intellectual and cultural pursuits outside of your home discipline,” and cited a wide range of activities including music, theatre, art both on campus and at the satellite Crane facility in Philadelphia, lectures, symposia and colloquia.”

“As you carry out your faculty responsibilities, I ask that you keep UD's tag line in mind -- excellence in everything that we do,” Watson said.

Following Watson were Joann Browning, associate dean for the arts; Ann Ardis, senior associate dean for the humanities; Joseph Pika, interim associate dean for the social sciences; and Doug Doren, interim associate dean for the natural sciences.
