7:48 a.m., Oct. 16, 2009----The University of Delaware Orchestra and Schola Cantorum, a chorus of students and singers from the community, performed Mendelssohn's Lobgesang for a live DVD recording under the direction of Brian Stone, assistant professor of music, and the recording has won a first honor diploma from the Masterplayers International Music Competition.

The competition is sponsored by the Masterplayers International Music Academy Corp. in Switzerland.

“I had almost forgotten I had submitted the DVD so I was wonderfully surprised and happy to receive notification of the award,” Stone said. “The competition is unique because all musicians in all categories -- conductors, ensembles and soloists -- compete against each other from all over the world.

“What was really gratifying was that out of three conductors selected for awards, I was the only one directing a student orchestra, and that was the University of Delaware Orchestra,” he said.

The members of the orchestra and Schola Cantorum, now directed by Krystal Rickard, instructor in the Department of Music, were pleased and honored by the international recognition, Stone said.
