1:07 p.m., Oct. 22, 2009----A new exhibit, “A Glory to the State: The Origins of the University of Delaware,” is now on display in the lobby of Hullihen Hall.
Featured in the display are items that document the school from its beginnings as a preparatory school, the chartering of Newark College and through Delaware College's closure and rebirth.
“The exhibit was installed in order to educate viewers about the origins and early history of the University of Delaware,” Ian Janssen, director of University Archives and Record Management, said.
Showcased in three glass display cases given to the University from an anonymous donor, the exhibit features documentation of the school's founding, buildings, student publications, programs of study, literary societies, publications and Commencements from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The items in the first case reflect the history of the Academy of Newark. The second case contains an administrative history of Newark College and Delaware College, which is documented through images of catalogs, as well as a drawing of Old College and photographs of the campus.
The third case contains reproductions of items that represent traditions and activities in student life during the 1800s. These include student newspapers, Commencement programs and items from literary societies.
“It is hoped that those who view the exhibit will take away a feel for the early life of the institution and a greater understanding of its rich -- but complex -- early history,” Janssen said.
The exhibit grew out of an idea from Debra Hess Norris, vice provost for graduate and professional education, to connect the University's traditions and history with the present, and with the support of President Patrick Harker, work began on the exhibit's creation. Coordinated by Susan Williams, assistant to the president, the exhibit team included Janssen and Lisa Gensel of University Archives and Records Management; Janis Tomlinson and Brian Kamen in University Museums; Timothy Murray and Anita Wellner of Special Collections, University of Delaware Library; and Connee McKinney of the Office of Communications & Marketing. Plans call for the exhibit to change on a rotating basis.
“A Glory to the State: The Origins of the University of Delaware” is on view from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., weekdays, through the fall semester.
