1:07 p.m., Oct. 21, 2009----The Delaware Environmental Institute (DENIN) at the University of Delaware will be officially launched during a public ceremony in Mitchell Hall on Friday, Oct. 23.
The launch is the culmination of three days of events, which kicked off with Campus Sustainability Day on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
On Thursday, Oct. 22, Student Environmental Sustainability Day will feature a student symposium of graduate research poster presentations and undergraduate videos on environmental sustainability issues and topics, and activities sponsored by Residence Life, including “2020: A Greener Vision-An Environmental Sustainability Activities Fair.” All events will take place in a tent on The Green.
Free sustainable products and raffle tickets will be given away all day. Raffle ticket prizes include a $25 gift certificate from Iron Hill Brewery, a $25 gift certificate from Caffé Gelato and a Philadelphia Eagles mini-helmet autographed by linebacker Stewart Bradley.
The DENIN launch ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 23. The day's events also will include a showcase of environmental sustainability projects submitted by students in grades K-12 in Delaware, which will be displayed alongside the graduate student posters inside the tent on The Green.
A representative from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Delaware Gov. Jack Markell, and Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Secretary Collin O'Mara will attend the event.
Francois Morel, Albert G. Blanke Jr. Professor of Geosciences at Princeton University, and William H. Schlesinger, president of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, will present scientific talks during the event.
Donald L. Sparks, S. Hallock du Pont Chair in soil and environmental chemistry at the University of Delaware, is the director of the Delaware Environmental Institute, a multidisciplinary institute focused on providing solutions to global environmental challenges through knowledge-based partnerships that integrate environmental science, engineering and policy.
DENIN will be closely allied with the colleges at UD and other educational institutions in the state. Institute research will initially focus on three areas: Processes at the air, land and sea interface, environmental forecasting and restoration, and ecosystem health and sustainability.
