"Jim is returning to the faculty so that he can dedicate himself to expanding research opportunities for our college. This is essential given our college's planned contributions to the University's Path to Prominence. I appreciate Jim's willingness to take on this important role for the college and I am personally grateful to him for his leadership and assistance as deputy dean,” Matt said.

The college will be conducting a search for a new deputy dean.

Richards conducts research in sport and clinical biomechanics in the college's Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences and has worked extensively with Olympic-level figure skaters from across the United States. He has developed a hinged figure skate designed to reduce injuries and is using cutting-edge technology to study the on-ice performance of skaters.

Richards holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Connecticut, a master's degree from UD and a doctoral degree from Indiana University. He served as a teaching assistant at UD from 1976-1978 and joined the faculty in 1980. He is a co-founder of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biomechanics and Movement Sciences (BIOMS).
