Presentations
Farley Grubb, professor of economics, "The Distribution of Congressional Spending During the American Revolution, 1775-1780: The Problem of Geographic Balance," at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, United Kindom, conference on “The Spending of the States: Fiscal-Military States in the Eighteenth Century,” Nov. 6.
Darryl Flaherty, assistant professor of history, “Smoldering Sweetness: Gender and Jury in a 1928 Tokyo Courtroom,” presented at both the Western and Mid-Atlantic regional conferences of the
Association for Asian Studies, Oct. 24 and 31.
Hilton Brown, Harriet T. Baily Professor of Art, Art History and Women's Studies in the Department of Art, presented two lectures and gallery tours at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., on July 13 and July 27, for the annual summer Teacher's Institute and Seminar. The seminar topic was American art during the 18th and 19th centuries to showcase the completion of the recent three-year renovation of the gallery's American wing. Brown spoke about the materials and techniques of the important American painters: Copley, Stuart, Homer, Eakins and Sargent.
Jaime Margalotti, senior assistant librarian, and E. Evan Echols, assistant librarian, both in the Special Collections Department of the University of Delaware Library, presented "Perspectives of EAD at the Institutional, Research, and National Level," at “Bridges and Tunnels: Building Archival Connections,” the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives (MARAC) fall 2009 conference, Oct. 30, Jersey City, N.J.
Faculty from the Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies participated in the annual conference of the International Textile and Apparel Association held in Bellevue, Wash., Oct. 29-31. Huantian Cao, associate professor, and colleagues presented papers on “Development of Estimation Model to Predict Firefighter's Core Temperature from Microclimate Data” and “The Vacuum Sealing Effect on Dry Thermal and Evaporative Resistance of Multi-layered Samples for Two Ballistic Materials.” Belinda Orzada, professor, presented a poster on “Connections: Apparel Design and Community” and she and alumni Tiffany Rogers and Elizabeth Way presented a paper on “Exploration of Nonwoven Fabrics for Men's Jackets.” Rosetta LaFleur, associate professor, presented two creative designs, "Diamond Back Cocktail Dress” and "Maasi Echo” as a finalist in the organization's design competition. Marsha Dickson, professor and department chairperson, participated in a panel presentation on “USDA Challenge Grants: Bridge to Inter-institutional Collaboration and External Funding” and organized and led the annual meeting of the international consortium of Educators for Socially Responsible Apparel Business that meets alongside the ITAA conference.
Exhibits
Hilton Brown, Harriet T. Baily Professor of Art, Art History and Women's Studies in the Department of Art, had several paintings on exhibit in Art Hamptons, a new art international fair on Long Island, in the booth of Gary Snyder/Project Space, his New York dealer.
David Meyer, assistant professor of art, was invited to create a site-specific installation and lecture about his work at the Visual Art Center, San Antonio College in Texas. The lecture was held, and the exhibit opened, Oct. 13.
