1:23 p.m., Nov. 19, 2009----University recognition of student honors is being changed to provide better ways to celebrate student achievements and to make it easier for family members to attend the recognition events, Havidán Rodríguez, deputy provost, has announced.
Instead of Honors Day, previously held in early May, seniors who have achieved honors will be recognized at their respective convocations during Commencement weekend. Students with honors who are not seniors will be recognized by their colleges during Parents and Family Weekend in the fall.
“It was often difficult for parents and family members to schedule multiple trips to the campus in the spring to attend both Honors Day and Commencement,” Rodríguez says. “Moving the senior honors to the Commencement convocations will mean more parents and families will be able to attend and help celebrate their students' success.”
Michael Gilbert, vice president for student life, said, “The addition of student recognition to the Parents and Family Weekend brings the celebration of scholarly achievement to this already popular event. I'm sure parents and family members will welcome the opportunity to see their students recognized for their academic accomplishments.”
The Excellence in Teaching and the Excellence in Advising and Mentoring awards, selected by the Faculty Senate Committee on Student and Faculty Honors, were previously announced at Honors Day. Effective this academic year, these awards to faculty members and graduate students will be announced during the May meeting of the Faculty Senate.
This spring, Commencement will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, May 29, in Delaware Stadium. Convocations and other ceremonies will be held Thursday through Saturday, May 27-29, at various times and locations, which are detailed on a special Spring Commencement Web page.
The University Honors Program will continue to have its annual recognition ceremony and breakfast, and it will move from early May to the Friday of Commencement weekend.
For 2010, Parents and Family Weekend is scheduled Friday through Sunday, Oct. 15-17. As details become available, they will be posted on the Parents and Family Weekend Web page.
The revised academic calendar for 2009-2010 and the preliminary calendar for 2010-2011 are available on the University Registrar's Web site.
